What is an ick? The 2026 guide to sudden dating turn-offs

An ick is that instant, irrational full-body cringe when your crush does one specific thing and the vibe dies on the spot. Here's where it came from and why it's taking over dating.

What is an ick, actually?

An ick is a sudden, irrational, whole-body cringe you feel about someone you were into — triggered by one tiny thing they did. One minute you're catching feelings, the next you're watching them run for a bus and you cannot come back from it.

Icks are different from red flags. A red flag is a real warning sign. An ick is often something harmless — a mannerism, a phrase, a photo pose — that your brain suddenly decides is a dealbreaker.

Where the word comes from

The term blew up on TikTok around 2020 and never left. Now it's the default word for "I don't know why but I can't do this anymore."

The three types of icks

  1. Physical icks — how they walk, how they eat, how they sit on a chair.
  2. Behaviour icks — talking to waiters weirdly, laughing too hard at their own jokes, using the word "gals".
  3. Digital icks — the group photo where they're the only one not smiling, the caption "living my best life 🥂", replying with a single "k".

Are icks fair?

Honestly, no. Most of them are unhinged. That's kind of the point — it's a gut reaction, not a court case. Which is exactly why we built the Ickmeter quiz: so you can score the date and see if it's an actual ick or if you're just being a bit delulu.

Should you tell them?

No. Absolutely not. Take the quiz, screenshot the result, send it to your group chat, move on.

think your date was worse?

score them out of 100 with the ick quiz — or tell us the story and get $50 if we use it.
